Features
P6  Data-Intensive Computing
Guest Editor: Xiao Nong

P8  Data-Intensive Scalable Computer Architecture
Xiao Nong and Lai Mingche
Facing the increasing demand of processing massive data with the magnitude of Petabytes (PB) or Zettabyte (ZB), high performance computing systems will encounter a series of challenges. Prof. Xiao et al. from the National University of Defense Technology introduce the relevant development and trend.

P12  The Technology Transform in the Era of Data Explosion
Lionel Ni and Luo Wuman
Prof. Ni et al. from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology point out that how to store and analyze extremely large-scale spatio-temporal datasets effectively is the critical issue for the data explosion era. They suggest to address this issue from three perspectives: system scalability, data complexity and query flexibility and present their experiences of implementing a real large-scale system based on MapReduce and Data Vitalization.

P21 Data Center Networks
Chen Guihai, Wu Pan and Yang Panlong
In their article, Prof. Chen et al. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University discuss why data centers are necessary and how to design efficient data center networks to support cloud computing in the context of the Internet of things.

P26 Programming Model and Self-adaptive Resource Management for Cloud Computing
Guo Minyi and Xu Chengzhong
A Prof. Guo from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Prof. Xu from Wayne State University in USA introduce some programming models for cloud computing such as MapReduce and Dryad, and propose a new one called template meta-programming with cache-aware work-stealing scheduler. Additionally, they also introduce their research on self-adaptive resource management by using machine learning methods.

P33 Large-scale Data-intensive Computing System
Liao Xiaofei, Fan Xuepeng, Xu Fei, Li He and Jin Hai
PHow to deal with massive data growing at the rate 4 times faster than Moore’s law, is now a big challenge for critical IT infrastructures. Dr. Liao et al. from Huazhong University of Science & Technology introduce their current works on such issue, including a programming model Function Flow and a distributed computing framework Clustm based on that model.

P40 Performance Evaluation of a Datacenter Computer
Zhan Jianfeng, Wang Lei and Sun Ninghui
Dr. Zhan et al. from the Institute of Computing, CAS, try to define the conception of a datacenter computer, and analyze the differences between the datacenter computer and the high performance one. They also present their research on the design of the corresponding benchmarks.

Columns
P44  Calling for China’s Cyberspace Strategy
PGuo Li, Chen Wenguang and Pan Zhuting
As the co-chairs of CCF YOCSEF forum titled the China Strategy for Cyberspace, Prof. Guo from the Institute of Computing, CAS, Prof. Chen from Tsinghua University, and Mr. Pan from the Beijing Venustech Co., summarize the major viewpoints of invited speakers on how to establish China’s strategy for cyberspace.

P49  Rethinking Ubiquitous Computing
Yu Zhiwen and Zhou Xingshe
Ubiquitous computing has been a hot research topic in the past decade and faces many challenges nowadays. Prof. Yu and Prof. Zhou from the Northwestern Polytechnical University present their review of the history of ubiquitous computing, and suggest more research efforts be focused on the most fundamental problems, such as theoretical framework and architecture, in this area.

P56 Q&A on Enterprise Research Management Framework
 Pan Zhuting
Dr. Pan, the CSO of the Beijing Venustech, raises a series of interesting and challenging questions on Enterprise Research Management Framework (ERMF), proposed by himself, for small and medium sized enterprises and presents his answers for some of them.

P62   Paper or Grant
Liu Yuxian
Nowadays, paper and grant are two critical benchmarks to measure the performance of faculty. Dr. Liu from Tongji University argues that grants not necessarily always generate good research, and in many occasions excellent works receive no grant, especially those groundbreaking ones. She suggests the two scales be reasonably weighted.
