P6  Biometric Computing
Guest Editor: Zhang Dapeng

Advances in Classic Biometric Identification
Yang Jingyu and Sun Mingming
Classic biometric identification techniques have achieved remarkable successes in many constrained environments, but are still facing great challenges in complex unconstrained environments. Prof. Yang et al. from Nanjing University of Science and Technology selectively summarize a few advances that improve the adaptability and robustness of face, fingerprint, and iris recognition systems for working in complex unconstrained environment.

16 New Members in the Family of Biometric Computing
Zhou Jie, Zhang Lin and Zhang Lei
In the past decades, great progress has been made in the field of biometrics based personal authentication. Yet new technologies are continuously emerging in this field to meet various practical needs. Prof. Zhou et al. from Tsinghua University selectively summarize three new members emerging these days in the family of biometric computing, including hand vein recognition, human ear recognition, and finger-knuckle-print recognition, from the aspects of data acquisition, preprocessing, feature extraction, and feature matching.

23 Palmprint Recognition
Huang Deshuang, Jia Wei and Li Wenxin
Palmprint recognition, as one of emerging biome-trics authentication technologies, has shown very promising robust performance. Prof. Huang et al. from Institute of Intelligent Machines, CAS pre-sent an informative survey on this technology, covering its developmental course, main recognition algorithms, and the major trends.

29 Medical Biometric Computing
You Jane, Guo Dongmin and Zhang Hongzhi
The biometric traits of human being can be used for not only authentication, but also for indicating the physical condition of different internal organs. Generally, the conditions of internal organs can be deduced by the symptoms of biometric traits. Prof. You et al. from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University introduce the feasibility of exploiting these traits as the source of information for the diagnostic tasks in virtue of suitable instrumentation and statistical pattern recognition approaches.

36 Facial Aesthetic Biometrics
Zhang Dapeng and Chen Fangmei
Prof. Zhang et al. from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University apply biometric techniques to facial aesthetic analysis, which aims to reveal the underlying model between facial features and facial attractiveness. They propose the concept of human face shape space and verify the “averageness hypothesis” by quantitatively analyzing the effect of facial geometric features on facial attractiveness.
