Ivan Sutherland（苏泽兰）是计算机图形学之父和虚拟现实之父。1963年在其麻省理工学院的博士论文中提出了三维交互式图形系统，并成功开发了著名的“画板”（SketchPad）系统。它是有史以来第一个交互式绘图系统，也是交互式电脑绘图的开端。人们后来在此基础上相继开发了CAD和CAM。它们被称为20世纪下半叶最杰出的工程技术成就之一。1965年他发表了一篇名为“终极的显示”的论文，描述的就是我们现在熟悉的“虚拟现实”（Virtual Reality）。早在虚拟现实技术研究的初期，苏泽兰就在其“达摩克利斯之剑”系统中实现了三维立体显示。增强现实系统是指在真实环境之上提供信息性和娱乐性的覆盖，它则是苏泽兰在进行有关头戴显示器的研究中引入的。

报告标题：Sixty Years of Computing: A Personal Recollection

报告摘要：This talk recalls 60 years of computing. In that time, computers and software have changed almost beyond recognition. It has been my good fortune to see and participate in some major changes in computing and to know well some of the people responsible.

This talk offers a close-up view of the growth of graphics from 1963 to 1975 and the Mead-Conway integrated circuit revolution that followed a few years later. I will speculate on what helps major technical changes. I hope to convey both the very personal nature of technical research and the thrill I have had from learning new things. Three factors seem important to good research: 1) a worthy problem, 2) financial support, and 3) leadership. Of these, leadership is the most difficult to find.

报告人简介：Ivan Sutherland received his PhD from MIT in 1963 with a well-known thesis called Sketchpad. His varied career has included government service, teaching at several distinguished universities, consulting, and private industry. He is the author of numerous technical articles and more than 70 United States patents. Dr. Sutherland is a member of both the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences. He holds ACM’s Turing Award and the Kyoto Prize. He makes his home in Portland, Oregon and spends full time as a Visiting Scientist at Portland State University.
